Greg Iteen · forward deployed engineering

I design the memory, mutation contracts and runtime infrastructure on which AI agents depend.

I am Greg Iteen, a forward deployed engineer. My work addresses a structural weakness in agentic software: state that is opaque, unvalidated and bound to the vendor who stores it. I replace that state with typed Markdown documents, admit every write through a deterministic operation contract, and compile what an agent has learned into the instruction files that govern its next session.

The same foundation runs in production across two multi-tenant platforms and is published as an open specification, a reference engine and a memory system that any agent can adopt.

Principles

Principles the software enforces

Each principle below is implemented in running code and specified in writing, so it can be verified rather than taken on trust.

The document is the database

State is a folder of Markdown files whose YAML frontmatter is validated against a type registry. Agents never write those files directly. They submit an envelope, and the kernel checks identity, replays duplicate idempotency keys, validates content, authorizes the principal, verifies any lease and commits with a compare-and-swap. A mutation exists only once its event is durably appended; before that point a failure leaves no trace. Relational tables survive as projections, rebuilt from the documents rather than trusted in their place.

Memory is compiled, not recalled

Retrieval alone cannot guarantee that an agent obeys a rule; the rule has to be present before the first token is generated. Total Recall stores each correction, preference and invariant as a typed node with a modality (must, should, must not) and a priority, then compiles the binding set into CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, GEMINI.md and their peers. The compiler writes only between its own markers, budgets each section so that no rule is silently dropped, and refuses to run from a stale copy of itself. Semantic search remains available for everything that does not need to be in context.

The command line grows its own verbs

Agents repeat multi-step procedures and rediscover them in every session. In Total Recall, a proven procedure is promoted to a verb: total-recall <name>, with a uniform contract for help, JSON output and exit codes. Each command declares a risk class that is published beside it; the composable-CLI plugin now in development enforces those classes, so a command that spends money, changes DNS or revokes a secret will print its plan and halt until it is explicitly confirmed. Every compile regenerates the list of available verbs from the command files themselves, which means the instructions can never describe a command that does not exist.

.ucwdocuments

A business is a portable artifact

Every document type carries a portability class. Structural documents (workflows, rules, pages, assistants) constitute the model and ship; resource-bound documents (a domain, a phone number) ship as parameters to be bound at install; tenant-private documents (customers, transcripts, tasks) never leave. A workspace therefore exports as one .ucw bundle that can be inspected, validated, sold and provisioned into a new tenant. Import replays through the same operation contract, so provisioning the same bundle twice commits nothing the second time.
